I would never want to see a sequel to this movie, and I'll tell you why. What it amounts to is this: though the basic plot of Labyrinth is eternal, the movie itself is very dated. That's actually it's charm. Labyrinth is a movie that could've only been made in the 80s. The combination of Bowie music, muppets, and surreal special effects creates a distinct mood, one which is very much appreciated by those of us who were kids back then. I am in no way saying that younger (or older) people can't enjoy the movie. Clearly, that's not the case at all. But the real magic of the thing is rooted in that special mood. I cringe when I hear about Labyrinth manga, because that stuff is so far removed from what made the movie great, and I know that any sequel would similarly miss the point. If they want to keep making sequels to other 80s fantasy movies, like the Neverending Story, I say, "fine, go for it". So far the sequels have been horrible, but if they get Tim Burton and Peter Jackson together, for instance, and really dump some time and money into it, a great Neverending Story sequel is totally possible. But Labyrinth is different. No good sequel to that movie could ever be made without robbing it of it's essential magic. What would your thoughts be on a Labyrinth prequel then? OR what if they turned Labyrinth into a musical? I agree with your logic on this subject as I too have watched many horrible sequels in my day. I don't think that there could ever be a way for the Jim Henson company to create a Labyrinth sequel. With the points you stated, I can see that it would be impossible to do. As for the manga, have you read it? Although I'm not exactly thrilled with some of the ways the RTL manga went, I have to say that there were parts of the manga where I was a bit surprised at how such small things COULD be used in an ideal sequel. For instance...let's take the finale of the 4th volume. It was open ended - much like the movie was - and the way (SPOILER) that the writers made it seem like Toby was being tested in order to grow up, according to Jareth, was very interesting. And I loved the speech where Toby said: "Some paths are timeless...and lead us to old friends and times forgotten. Some paths are unfamiliar and lead us to new friends and new beginnings. Sometimes they'll inspire us...sometimes they'll make us laugh. And sometimes they'll break our hearts. If we follow our dreams, sometimes they'll fail us, sometimes we'll fail them. But we have to try." I was so moved by the speech because I could almost see this in a Labyrinth sequel. It sounded like it truly was meant for Labyrinth fans and I was blown away. (END OF SPOILER) So while I agree with you that I didn't like the idea too much of a Labyrinth sequel in manga form, I was quite surprised with some of the scenes that took place. It was worth reading.

Unless Bowie was in it, and depending on the story they told, I think I'd rather see a prequel as well. It just wouldn't be the same to have Jareth in a sequel, played by someone else. However, I wouldn't mind seeing someone else play a younger Jareth. I agree that Sarah's story was told in the first movie. Either way the original would still be my favorite; it has that magical charm to it. One of my friends and I actually started trying to write our own sequel screenplay one time, lol. We, of course, were going to star in it. It would've had Sarah in the beginning, selling off the Labyrinth book at a yard sale; Jareth was of course going to be in it, too. We didn't get too far but it was fun dreaming about it,

I for one would definitely like to see a sequel ... NOT "Magna" style however as the entire story line was horrid (not to mention a complete waste of good money). As the Magna series *does* indeed have Henson & Co. personal stamp of approval - that automatically makes it "canon" ... NOT in my book though. There are so many unrecognized talented writers out there that I'm certain *somebody* could come up with an incredible script. However, Henson & Co.... if YOU'RE reading this, NO CGI!!!! That would ruin the entire project.
Besides, have any of you seen recent pictures of Mr. Bowie? He could definitely pull off playing the role of "Jareth" again. If perchance he is one of the many lurkers on this forum (of which I'm highly doubtful) - PLEASE send me the contact info for your personal cosmetic surgeon (not that I need it - yet). Whomever is responsible did an incredible job! Ye Gods! The man looks as though he's in his mid to late 30's again!!
Sequel? Definitely yes. Sappy as it sounds, I would like to see the two characters get together on a much more personal level (as in "Sarah" eventually caves in and DOES become his Queen - despite the botched so-called "proposal" made by "Jareth") <---- SURELY, the character can find a way to *seriously* make up for that clusterfrig. Of course, Jennifer Connelly would HAVE to be a part of the project - otherwise, it wouldn't be quite the same.
Speaking of Jennifer Connelly ... have any of you seen her cameo in the film "Inkheart"? Think of how beautiful she looked there. NOW - think of how *regal* she would look if she were to take on the role as "The Goblin QUEEN"!!! Now, who wouldn't want to see that?!
As for "Toby" - casting would have to find some incredibly gorgeous guy (perhaps, an unknown) who would strongly resemble "Jareth" (Jareth: "I think I'll call him Jareth, he's got my eyes"... I know he said something along those lines). For some reason, I have the image of an older Toby as being extremely rebellious and heavily into punk (in part due to memories of his experience in the Labyrinth deeply buried within his subconscious). Hmmm, perhaps THAT'S just part of the reason Jareth and Sarah would hook up again? Toby draws his attention. Future Prince of the realm maybe? Or just another little punk that needs to be taught a lesson by Jareth himself?
God KNOWS I lack the imagination or writing skills to pull off such a massive undertaking. Therefore - I challenge anyone out there who DOES possess such skills (lurker or not) to produce such a script and sent it out to Henson & Company (of course, have it copyrighted first by all means).

I would love to see a sequel get made but only if they were able to get David & Jennifer back into the roles of Jareth & Sarah. Now I haven't read the Manga so I can't even comment on that.

Yes, but not without Bowie (and Jennifer). It would have to be a full singing and dancing animated affair with lots of silliness... and glitter... and tight trousers.

Maybe, maybe not. I think that there are enough people who like the original ending (weird as that may sound) that I wouldn't inflict an unwanted sequel on them. That's what fan fiction and (gulp) the manga is for. That way people can end it however they want. If it was just me, it depends on who's directing. From the way the new Dark Crystal movie has been floundering in production because Henson is owned by Disney now it might not be very good.

Yeah, that's the problem now that Disney have taken over. They'd probably cast a Jonas brother as Jareth!!! I'd hate to see anyone other than David as Jareth. Helen

Actually, there was an interview done recently on the set of Dark Shadows (it's no longer on YouTube) where Tim Burton expressed his interest in REMAKING Labyrinth. All I have to say for that is: NNNNNNNOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Imagine this: Johnny Depp as Jareth. OR Helena B. Carter as Sarah. REALLY?! I love Tim Burton's work, don't get me wrong, but I think he needs to stay away from Labyrinth. Peter Jackson, on the other hand, would prove to be more interesting. I would like to see him direct something...prequel, sequel, etc.

So I have time today on Facebook in demand at World of Froud and I got the following response:
Katja: Are you make a Labyrinth-Sequel? World of Froud: Right now the sequel to Trolls is being finalized……and no Labyrinth in sight. Henson Productions has only talked about it…..
So I got the Henson Company asked the same question on Facebook and wait for an answer.

I would love to see a sequel. My friend told me recently that David Bowie is looking older and that it would be harder for him to take back the role. But, they could use that to their advantage.

Boo on that link! According to another article it's not supposed to be a reboot (luckily) but a continuation of sorts. A reboot would be horrible on this film. I like some movies with multiple versions but they're more often than not a classic story like The Secret Garden. I also liked thr newest Annie but it's a different type of movie anyway. Certain movies should not be redone; let future generations see the vintage original. 80s fantasy movies have a nice charm.
No sequel would be as good as the one my friend and I dreamed up soon after we fel in love with Labyrinth and Jareth. If only we'd worked on it more. We only had written the first scene pretty much and it was going to be similar to Freaky Friday where we wished each other away to the Labyrinth, I think. There was going to be an ice skating scene with one of us and Jareth and the other was going to have another ballroomesque type of scene with him. Jareth was of course going to be played by DB, lol. This was around 2003 that we thought of it.
I still think a prequel-if done right-could be interesting. I wouldn't mind someone else playing a young Jareth; I wouldn't want to see someone else playing a current/older Jareth though. I'm not sure how they could have a sequel without him either. Unless he had an heir and in the beginning they somehow use old footage montage-style and start with said heir mourning Jareth's death.
