variety.com/2014/film/news/billy-crystal-joins-henson-which-witch-1201326184/Read the last paragraph very closely, and you'll see confirmation that a 'Labyrinth' sequel is in development - this is VERY surprising. I'd be very surprised if anything comes of this knowing the JHC's recent track record, but it's still interesting. What do people around here think of the prospect of a sequel? Without Connelly and Bowie, I don't see it working - for me, Labyrinth is Jareth and Sarah's story and I don't see a sequel working without them.

That world is so rich. I can see the possibilities for TONS of stories without Sarah. Stories without a Goblin King, though? Those are a little scarcer, and it would be VERY strange for to see someone new in the role.
Then again, the Fae are nothing if not INconsistent. They could totally pull a Doctor Who sort of thing and make it feasible. "Oh, I got tired of that face. Do you like the new one? Not that I care about your opinion..."

Yes! I think. It'd be interesting that's for sure. Though it'd be enjoyable without Sarah's character. Just my thought.

I really hope that it doesn't happen. I can't see David returning to his role as Jareth now and I wouldn't want to see anybody else play him. I wouldn't mind a sequel if it was done as a novel or graphic novel, although I'd rather see a Jareth sequel than a Jareth/Sarah sequel.

While the 'news' has obviously been refuted now, I've found that the most striking thing about this little piece of drama is the way the news spread like wildfire. There's clearly an appetite for new Labyrinth material, yet the Jim Henson Company seems strangely reticent to oblige. It's odd, really. I do wonder if it's because they know the fanbase is very sensitive (the sequel manga they released a few years ago did not go down well, to put it mildly), but I doubt they'd let that get in the way of a potentially lucrative enterprise.
While the hardcore fanbase is vocal it's obviously limited; however, I do think the general public would probably be more receptive to a Labyrinth film now than audiences were in the 1980s. Female-led fantasy movies are really in vogue at the moment, and Labyrinth gained far more traction on home media than it ever did in cinemas. Incredibly, the film is #148 on the Amazon UK DVD and blu-ray chart - the puts it ahead of the Twilight, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings boxsets.
I'd say it's highly unlikely that either Bowie or Connelly would come back. For that reason, if there were to be a 'new' Labyrinth film I'd much rather it was just rebooted and they started afresh. A sequel of any kind without Bowie and Connelly would be practically pointless, in my opinion.
