LADY SLEEPS-A-LOT! Ah well, perhaps that *should* have been me user ID since I unintentionally lied about posting in this section following an eight hour nap. That "nap" actually turned out to be more like TWELVE hours. (was a bit under the weather so to speak) So, hello again:) ... new here (duh, right? heh). SO new I have yet to slap an avatar or a signature line up .... meh, that'll come later when I decide upon what they shall be. Anyway - just a little about myself (so as not to bore you half to death). Pretty much a "Jill of all trades" ... anything from beading to wire wrapping to mechanical work to sewing (just to mention a few. I have an absolute, undying passion for tinkering with *anything* that's broken (at least 99% of the time, I can fix it). Oh, and judging from some of the posts I had read yesterday - it seems I'm the oldest one here so ... does that make me "the wise one" (ugh) or, your future Queen? HeHEEEEEE I have a few friends that will, in all likelihood be very interested in this particular forum so - I will send them an invite. The more, the merrier! *SNORT* - going back to the "Future Queen" bit, my best friend and I dressed up as "The Goblin King & Queen" for a Halloween costume contest in 2010. Walked away with second place in the contest (ONLY because my best friend "chickened out" at the last second). Funny thing is - when we walked in the bar, ALL heads turned and I heard people (in shock) swearing up and down that my best friend was INDEED David Bowie himself. I actually heard a few whispers about getting an autograph heh. It didn't help matters any that my other best friend (who runs karaoke at that bar) kept approaching "The Goblin King" and singing "you remind me of the babe ...". Of course, eventually - everyone realized that this was just another person in costume. Since Halloween, I've been called everything from "Lady Quinn" (from the oh so horrid Magna series) to "The Goblin Queen" - hence the user ID Lady Quinn. I'll have to post a few pictures from that evening once I sign up for a photobucket (or other photo hosting) account. Anyway ... hope everyone is having a GREAT Saturday so far! CHEERS! ~Lady Quinn OH - by the way, to any moderators reading this ... since I AM NOT a minor (how do I prove this?) I would like access to The Escher Room as I do have quite a few screen captures along with captions I've added (of a non-disgusting/non-offensive nature) to post for the entertainment of the adult group on here. I believe you'll enjoy them immensely *evil grin*. There are a few that I can post for the minor group here, so - as soon as I create a photo hosting account, I'll start up a new thread for photo captions (and perhaps, photo manipulations since that is one of my favorite pastimes. Unfortunately though, I haven't done any Labyrinth photo manipulations as of yet - just the captions).

Welcome to the forum. It's always nice to see a new face around here ;D Well done for coming second place. If your friend chickened out does that mean you won it all by yourself? Extra kudos if you did Can't wait to see your pictures. Helen

Extra kudos if you did Can't wait to see your pictures. Helen Hi Helen and thanks for the warm welcome! LOL ... yeah, I took second place all by my lonesome. Hmmm, didn't notice the insert image before. However, I'm on the *wrong* computer - and, I'll have to do a re-size on the images. Will pop those in once I'm on my computer and not hubby's. Ah, wait a sec ... what exactly is the size restriction on popping images into a message proper? I read up on the avatar and sig line limits but I don't recall having seen anything in regard to message image sizes. Will wait to hear from you on that. Anyway, speaking of new faces ... I shot off the link to three other rabid Labyrinth fans *cough* um - friends. Hopefully, we'll see them here soon! ~The "Halloween" Goblin Queen P.S. Just for future reference (when I do post the pictures) - the clothing we were wearing came straight out of our closets, they were not purchased from a costume shop

I've never really decided on an image limit. I suppose as long as it's not huge and knocks the forum alignments off!! hehe Helen

Sewing _and_ crafting _and_ tinkering? Oh wow *glom* *backs up and composes* ahem. For how long? I've tried my hand at sewing before and I suck. Or rather I and my machine suck XD. Plastic canvas, yes, but not anything wearable. Been toying with chanmail for a few years but I think I either haven't found the right pliers yet or my tiny, skinny hands just aren't strong enough to do it prolifically. And I like costuming but I'm not very good at it, I'm more of a music/ear person than a visual person. But it doesn't stop me from trying! Definitely bring your friends! We really aren't few but sometimes you wouldn't know it from trying to find a bunch of us in the same room. And Bezzo, I'm 27, can I get that Escher Room password, too? Thanks!

Sewing _and_ crafting _and_ tinkering? Oh wow *glom* *backs up and composes* ahem. Hi Tink Well, as for the sewing - oh, on and off for about 30 years (depending on how badly I want something LOL!) Ah geeez, I'm showing me age I use my mothers *ancient Kenmore model 158.12310. It doesn't have all the bells & whistles the newer models have but, it's sufficient for my/our needs. Believe it or not, hubby actually creates the patterns (he had been doing this since he was a child - helping his mother create the patterns for for Mardi Gras costumes for the entire family every year). Next project is the GORGEOUS red gown that Milla Jovovich briefly wore in the Resident Evil series (I've been wanting that gown ever since I laid eyes on it). Just waiting on hubby to draw up the pattern. I've tried my hand at sewing before and I suck. Or rather I and my machine suck XD. Nah ... it's easy enough, just do a search on how to follow patterns and read up on it. You'll get the hang of it in no time
Plastic canvas, yes, but not anything wearable. Been toying with chainmail for a few years but I think I either haven't found the right pliers yet or my tiny, skinny hands just aren't strong enough to do it prolifically. Ok ... you have me on those two. I've never fooled around with plastic canvas OR chainmail <---- (Hmmmm, that is however making me think of trying my hand at making a slave ring/bracelet - *extremely* tedious working with seed beads). And I like costuming but I'm not very good at it, It's not very difficult once you learn how to follow a pattern, it is tedious and time consuming though. Not to mention, the materials can get very costly depending on what you are making.
I'm more of a music/ear person than a visual person. But it doesn't stop me from trying! You're one up on me in that category too. I *used* to play (guitar) before Hurricane Katrina hit but, I've *never* been able to play by ear. Always had to have a music sheet in front of me.
Definitely bring your friends! We really aren't few but sometimes you wouldn't know it from trying to find a bunch of us in the same room. Shot the e-mails off to them - all we have to do is sit and wait now ... hope you're having a good one! And Bezzo, I'm 27, can I get that Escher Room password, too? Thanks![/quote]

Chainmail is actually quite easy if you're talking about the little tiny baby rings and takes a bit of muscle power for the bigger stuff but is doable if you stick to aluminum. It's very time consuming, though, and you have to have very good vision to close the links completely so nobody gets scratched! I would recommend The Ring Lord's Jewelry kit in bright aluminum and a pair of their house chain-nose pliers for a beginner. They're a very reputable supplier out of Saskatoon; I get my stuff from them.
Plastic canvas it stupidly easy and about the best hand-sewing project I can think of for someone with no patience (like me) - fast results. My grandmother taught me when I was six and I've been doing it ever since. Ludicrously dated hobby (peaked in the eighties) but still fun, you can still find the stuff for it in most hobby stores and there are some really cool patterns online.
I've tried making a medieval dress costume from a pattern and I can't even make heads or tails of the written instructions, I'll have to dig it up to see if you can decipher it! (yeah, I know, it sounds like I'm not trying but I've gotten some beginner's sewing books and this is really weird in comparison)
Why did you stop playing music if I'm not being too nosy? Boy I wish I could sightread better - I'd have a lot better chance at getting steady jobs in my field! I've been taking piano lessons most of my life and on through college and to this day I can only read one ledger or the other if I sit there and study the chords, never both at the same time.

Chainmail is actually quite easy if you're talking about the little tiny baby rings and takes a bit of muscle power for the bigger stuff but is doable if you stick to aluminum. Ah, ok. I was going to ask if the metal you were using was dead hard, half hard or dead soft (and what type of metal of course). But, you apparently read my mind on that question. It's very time consuming, though, and you have to have very good vision to close the links completely so nobody gets scratched! I'm sure it is time consuming! Just as much as when you're fooling around with seed beads (heh, unless you cheat and use a "spin bowl" which makes the job a LOT easier!). Hmmmm ... on closing the links, try soldiering the ends together after you've closed them enough, that way - nobody gets scratched. The place I've mentioned sells different metals in sheets (or pre-cut squares) for that very purpose. IIRC, they do have aluminum. Ye Gods ... I would hate attempting that in stainless much less the medium you're working with! Although, I'll be the first to admit it is tempting as - personally making a chainmail shirt for hubby for the sole purpose of attending renaissance fairs would be something extremely cool to do! And, I think it's something he'd appreciate more than if it was something that I had purchased pre-made. Heh ... of course, I could cheat and commision my buddy Mark to do it as he is a metal smith who does set up a booth at the renaissance fair every year. Meh, ok - I'm rambling but, I'm just trying to wake up (bleh - O.P. surgery at 10:30 this morning. Just something very minor - but irritating nonetheless).
I would recommend The Ring Lord's Jewelry kit in bright aluminum and a pair of their house chain-nose pliers for a beginner. They're a very reputable supplier out of Saskatoon; I get my stuff from them. WOW! I *definitely* have to get a bunch of the tags (got some cool ideas in my head as soon as I spotted them) and some of the clasps (running low) ... and swarovski crystals, well - their coloring looks much more realistic than the main place I buy from. Not to mention, their prices are pretty reasonable. I just have to be *really* careful as to whom I purchase from and what materials (to make certain everything is hypoallergenic as we do sell our wares at festivals). Thanks for the recommendation! *SNORT* - I *must* be living in the dark ages LOL! I kid you not ... I have *never* heard of plastic canvas until you brought it up! Just out of curiosity, I'll have to check it out. Wait. Scratch that. I just did an image search and I HAVE seen things made from plasic canvas ... I just never knew what it was until now.I've tried making a medieval dress costume from a pattern and I can't even make heads or tails of the written instructions, I'll have to dig it up to see if you can decipher it! (yeah, I know, it sounds like I'm not trying but I've gotten some beginner's sewing books and this is really weird in comparison) Scan it, PM me ... I'll give you my email address so you can send me a copy and I'll see if I can walk (um, TALK) you through the areas you're having trouble with.
Not necessarily of medieval design (eh, more along the lines of renaissance) ... here's a cute, quick look to throw together (and no, I'm not an affiliate). Go to Body central and get these two items: No, wait. I'll PM you with this as I can't recall if links are allowed or not.
Why did you stop playing music if I'm not being too nosy? No, it's ok that you ask. Believe me when I say that I can pretty much speak for everyone who had gone through Hurricane Katrina. Our family and friends had evacuated (many, people that we didn't know were not fortunate enough to be able to do so). <---- On the other hand, some who *could* afford to leave were just crazy enough to remain behind. It was extremely trying and depressing times. Many lost everything they owned. Many lost their very lives. Many, myself included - returned home with fear in our hearts along with clinical depression. Simply put, I lost interest in everything I had a passion for. For one solid year, I went to group therapy - watched television and played computer games just to keep my head together. Anyone who has lived through a major natural disaster would understand this. Unfortunately - one person on IMDB didn't. Do you recall the made for TV film "Category Seven"? Well, on the message boards for that film, in regard to Hurricane Katrina, one person posted this nice little message "It's been over a month people ... get over it". Needless to say, I chewed that person a new one. Thankfully though, most people on there were kind and understanding.
At any rate ... that's the HUGE reason I quit playing and haven't done so in a very long time. I'll probably get back into it sooner or later. For the time being though, other things are keeping my hands occupied as we do have an upcoming festival.Boy I wish I could sightread better - I'd have a lot better chance at getting steady jobs in my field! Well, pre-Katrina - I had been playing for thirty something years. Have to wonder though if reading will come back to me so easily after almost six years have past. I've heard some say that once you learn, you never forget - however, I'm beginning to wonder exactly how true that is. Praying that reading easily is yours very soon! And ... that you get increasingly steady work!I've been taking piano lessons most of my life and on through college ~Sigh~ Wish I would have taken piano lessons. Don't know how true this statement is but, I've heard that if you master the piano - one can practically play any stringed instrument (I would however have to "just say no" to a banjo or ukelele LOL!!!!!)and to this day I can only read one ledger or the other if I sit there and study the chords, never both at the same time. Hmmmm ... that's odd. But, then again - I've never laid eyes on sheet music for the piano - so, in that department ... I freely admit to being clueless.
