If you had been given Sarah's choice, what would you have done? Personally, I would have suggested a compromise. Afterall, would you really want your little brother hanging around when you're planning to spend eternity with a sexy Goblin King?? heheh Helen

At Sarah's age? I probably would have done the exact same thing, truth be told. Now that I'm older and wiser I'd probably say to hell with the brother and become Jareth's Goblin Queen. Toby would be better off as a care-free goblin in the Underground than growing up in the general crapness that is reality Aboveground anyway. Or at least that's what my excuse would be.

I probably would have taken the crystal at the beginning of the movie, haha. At the end though, I always felt like Jareth was asking for something completely different instead of just "forget about the baby". I remember wondering why she didn't just accept...on the condition that he send Toby back, of course.

Yea, I think the whole time it was SARAH who was Jareth's main interest, the baby was just an amusing distraction and a way to get her into the labyrinth. It's funny but that last scene reminds me more than anything else of Jesus and Satan in the desert - (from the Gospel of Matthew chapter 4 verses 8-11 for anyone who cares to look it up) Not that I necessarily think that Jim Henson or Terry Jones were intentionally referring to this bible passage, but the thematic parallel is there nonetheless.

There's no way I would have chosen the kid over the smexy Goblin King in ridiculously tight pants! Call me crazy, but I really don't think Jareth would actually have hurt Toby anyway. Judging by Magic Dance, he seems to like kids too much <3

I personally would have chosen Jareth, but then again if I was 14 and didnt know that Jareth was offering more then just dreams, and that he probably wouldnt have harmed Toby, then I would have refused. HOWEVER! Now that Im older and understand what Jareths offer was; to be Queen, I would have made sure that Toby was alright and said yes.

Had I been Sarah, I would have been tempted by Jareth's offer, but in the end I would have met my responsibility rather than staying on as Jareth's bride. BECAUSE . . . . Jareth was NOT saying to Sarah, BE MY WIFE. He never ONCE said the words wife or queen or bride to Sarah. Because that is not what he was offering her. All Jareth was, was a personification of the world of little girl fantasy. He did not really offer love or romance or marriage to Sarah. He didn't offer to make Sarah his bride, but to keep her stuck in a child's world of make-believe and let's pretend, thus having her remain, forever, an emotional infant, and as much as Sarah loved fantasy, she knew it would be healthier to develop. So, Sarah and Jareth's parting WASN'T the parting of sweethearts. It was maturation. Sarah couldn't STAY among the SUBTERRANEANS because she was going through CH-CH-CHANGES and LEARNING TO BE A PART OF S-S-SOCIETY.
Maybe it would have been romantic for her to stay with him, but in the end, "healthy" had to win out over "romantic."
P. S., can you tell I am a Bowie fan ?:-)

No matter what age, I'd no doubt stay. Reality sucks! Besides, I'd get to be a Goblin Queen with a gorgeous king by my side. XD But really, it's clear that Sarah loathes the real world and doesn't seem to feel she belongs in it and Jareth wants a queen with whom he can rule with, rule over and be ruled by (hence "Fear me, love me, do as I say and I will be your slave."). Despising the real world the way Sarah does and wanting to fulfill a beloved characters wishes, I would have been as foolish a child as I am and stay.

I can honestly say no matter what age I would be... I would have quit somewhere along that epic journey. I can just picture me siting on a rock somwhere and saying screw this.
However if I put my quitter attitude aside, I would stay with out a doubt. Goblin Queen, gorgeous king with epic hair, hmmm... where do I sign?

this would be a struggle obviously, but i don't think i would chose jareth, the main reason is i would be suspicious i think it was all a trap.

A hard question. The fangirly half of me wants to say "What are you, NUTS? You're making me choose between a screaming baby and a Goblin King who happens to be hotter than a rutting moose in a forest fire?! What do you THINK I would do?" Ha, honestly though, if I were in Sarah's position, I know that my little brother would be my first priority (as much as it would pain me to not except everything Jareth has to offer). Like a few others said before me, I'd like to think I would come up with a compromise. Yes, I will spend eternity with you loving and fearing you, Jareth, so long as Toby is returned to the Aboveground unharmed. Or something along those lines. It's funny but that last scene reminds me more than anything else of Jesus and Satan in the desert - A nice parallel, especially considering that David Bowie was in The Last Temptation of Christ and all.

I was under the impression Jareth was going to turn Toby into a goblin. Not a bad life for him =) I'll take my dreams, you take the baby.
I could not honestly say that without my conscience hurting though. I guess I would have to fight through the Labyrinth. But I swear, if a talking worm says "Don't go that way" I would have said "Now I am curious, why not that way?"...

But I swear, if a talking worm says "Don't go that way" I would have said "Now I am curious, why not that way?"... Ahhhh, but then - we'd only have a film that lasted all of 20 minutes! With that being said, I *definitely* would have stayed (after of course vehemently insisting that Jareth scrap the conditions of "fear me and do as I say" in addition to including the words "WIFE", "QUEEN" and "I DO" to his um, offer. Oh yeah - one more thing, please sign on the dotted line ... heh). Oh wait WAIT ... where's the Prenup?! "Love me and I will be your slave" and "I swear on my status as an immortal not to fool around with anyone but you" MUST be written into that happy contract. Sadly, IRL my half brother does not know anything other than how to be a gargantuan prat after 21 years of life - so, the change would have been good for him. I do realize that in a way, it's not entirely his fault - a great deal of his personality stems directly from the "loving" environment he was raised in. Dear sweet "Gary" would have simply been transformed into a goblin as opposed becoming the cruel arrogant egotistical racist "adult" he had ultimately morphed into. Unfortunately ... it seems that everyone has, at the very least one person like that within his or her own family. At any rate, I would never have turned back - nor, would I have had any regrets. The only regret I *do* have is this: I have the tremendous misfortune of being related to such an uncaring, heartless individual by blood. Ok, yikes - enough of "analyze this". Admittedly though, the topic of discussion truly does force one into thinking about personal principles, what *really* matters in life and how one would react if presented with any such highly unlikely or surrealistic situation. ~Sigh~ "I wish ... I WISH"! Jareth? Oh damn, it didn't work LOL!!! Hello, and good afternoon to all (good night for me actually). Alright then, getting *slaphappy*tired*stupid* and not in a good way. Will post in the introduction section after a nice eight hour nap. I simply couldn't resist replying to this particular post.
