For those of you that have read the early script of Labyrinth, what did you think of it? A lot of things are the same, but some of them are significantly different. Specifically:
Yes, there are several other differences, but these were obviously the ones that intrigued me the most. I thought the initial meeting was kind of cheesy ("Give him back, you monster!!"). The bubble ball I think I would have to see to be able to judge it fairly. Naturally, the dialogue makes me warm and fuzzy inside ("You look like a queen. . ."), but I don't know if it's really necessary. There was still supposed to be a song, but whether it's "As the World Falls Down" or some other song isn't specified. The description of the song sounds very much like it, though. The scene is also more overtly sexual -- the "normal" Sarah accidently opens a a door to a dark room where pillow feathers are flying, after which Jareth finishes singing and moves in to kiss the Sarah in the mirror. Gahhh, I'm torn. Who wouldn't love even an ALMOST kiss between these two?? As for the final showdown between Jareth and Sarah. . . I love it and I hate it. I love the symbolism of Sarah falling onto Jareth's huge, "magnificent" bed, and I like how Jareth comes right out and says that he wants Sarah as his queen and admits to an admiration for her, but Sarah's dialogue is just awful ("I wouldn't want you if you were the last goblin on earth!"), and Jareth ends up acting as nothing more than a petulant child. Yes, I understand that that is a facet of him, but jeez. Let him retire with a little dignity.
Thoughts, anyone?
- The initial meeting between Sarah and Jareth - Jareth disguises himself as a man named Robin Zaker, the writer of a play that Sarah is rehearsing.
- The masquerade ball - The are TWO Sarahs. . . the "normal" Sarah watches the "other" Sarah dance with Jareth inside a mirror. Jareth nuzzles her hair at one point, and also tries to kiss her.
- The final confrontation - Sarah doesn't float down into ruins, she falls smack into the middle of Jareth's room IN HIS BED. He tells her flat out that he wants have her as his queen. Again, she'll have none of it, then beats him up and says words (no, not THOSE words -- they're not part of this script) that turn him into a goblin.
