So I decided to flip through one of my Bowie biographies to see what the author had to say about Labyrinth. I didn't expect anything nice (and there wasn't ), but I did find this paragraph pretty amusing: As someone who's seen several of Bowie's movies, I completely agree with that "of all of Bowie's costars" statement. I mean, some of his scenes with Clark in The Man Who Fell to Earth were explicit and WHOA, but that palpable attraction wasn't there. Definitely wasn't there with Arquette, and I'm not sure why Pfeiffer was included since they were in the same room for maybe 3 minutes. Just a Gigolo? Nope. Jazzin' For Blue Jean? Not really. The Hunger with Deneuve probably comes closest. It's romantic and sensual and all, but again, none of that almost magnetic pull that's between Bowie and Connelly at times. Does anyone else agree? Can you think of any other Bowie films with "chemistry"?

Yeah, I agree with you. I think David took a shine to Jennifer also. Helen

Oh, there was DEFINITELY some awesome chemistry between Bowie and Connelly. It wasn't just the ballroom scene-- the way he looks at her during Within You and at the end are the stuff fanfics are made of!
*has an entire folder on her computer to prove this point*

I've heard some rumours repeated nowhere of particular trustworthiness there was more than just on-screen chemistry between the two but I don't really believe any of it, Bowie does not strike me as that sort, plus I suspect Connelly's parents would have intervened if anything hinky were going on.
But they did mesh well on screen, for sure. And I can see why some people might *assume* there was something going on "off-camera" even if it's a somewhat absurd suggestion.
I can't really compare to Bowie's other films as I have not seen them besides The Prestige, where his character did not have a romantic interest.

Back to what you said about the rather*ahem* explicit scenes in The man who fell to earth. The only time they actually have some form of chemistry is when they first meet, and the first time we actually see them... You know . And the hunger was indeed a very sensual and there was some form of connection but I wouldn't call it chemistry.

Bowie's far too much of a gentlemanly sorta-guy for any of that. Back to what you said about the rather*ahem* explicit scenes in The man who fell to earth. The only time they actually have some form of chemistry is when they first meet, and the first time we actually see them... You know . Haha, the first time they. . . you know ( ). . . always makes me think of a science experiment. Like I can picture Bowie thinking, "Hmm, if I do X, maybe Y will happen." LOL

Urgghh, that woman!!! She had such an irritating voice!! David didn't really get on with Candy Clark though.... "I didn't get along at all well with that girl Candy. She was so histrionic and she had one of those voices that could peel paint off the wall." Whereas with Jennifer.... "Jennifer was absolutely right for the part of Sarah. She's extremely pretty, with looks rather like those of the teenage Elizabeth Taylor - she's also a damn good actress." Helen

Thanks!! Well, I have this shipper "Sarah/Jareth" since ever! But recently, I am obsessed by the idea of Bowie/Connelly. I know, I am crazy...but what can i say? They are cute together...what girl wouldn't like to be with him? It's DAVID BOWIE after all! LOL So I started to looking for theories, and things about them in the time of the movie...and I found very interesting things. Some of those things you can see here, on my LJ: db-labyrinth.livejournal.com/They are quotes, pictures, curious things, and a fanfic I am writing about them. I think Jen had a crush on him... she said that a friend of her was obsessed by him and she (Jen) wasn't too much into rock star thing...But when she met him, she was nervous...and after 3 days, bowie and her are confortable with each other. She talks a lot about him... (quotes are on LJ) and also Bowie was in charming with her. In his biography, i read that he was excited in a sex scene with some actress, in some movie that i forgot the name... So i was thinking...and if the same thing happened with Jen? you can't say they didn't have chemistry and something in the air. Besides, Bowie is like a God of Sex! (He doesn't matter if you are man, woman, or Goblin) hahahaha. Seriously... if you have the chance to read his bio you will see. The man have a huge sex appeal. And I forgot: WHAT SHE MEANS??

I think it was just a mutual admiration that they had for each other. I don't think there were any hidden romantic feelings. What she meant in that last quote was that she didn't fully understand his appeal to people, not just his sexual appeal but his general appeal. She does say herself that she wasn't in touch with popular culture at the time.
