I finally got around to replacing that stone-age record player I ultimately destroyed in the 10th grade, so in addition to being able to listen to all of my mom's old Simon & Garfunkel and Jethro Tull records I stole from her in middle school, I decided to pop down to the local used record shop this weekend to hunt for some goodies. I found quite a few Bowie records, most of them I already have on CD (exceptions being David Live, Pinups and that silly Mick Jagger collaboration single thingy) so these were primarily purchased for the OOOHSHINYCOVERS. A few (crappy) photos of my favorites - 1. Pretty Bowie Face on this reissue of Space Oddity that will likely spend more time on my wall than on the record player. 2. A rather beat up copy of Diamond Dogs but the record is, surprisingly, totally playable, no skips or anything. Pity about the cover, but it was only 3 bucks and those bulldog women give me nightmares anyway. 3. Ziggy'n'Twiggy! How can you lose? 4. 1990 Ryko reissue of Aladdin Sane. Kind of the "iconic image" of Glam!Bowie, no? All in all a successful venture, methinks. =D In slightly related news, I've decided Tin Machine is listenable if you go through the liner notes and skip all the tracks with Soupy Sales Spawn in the writing credits. Funny how that works. ;D

Ooh, pretty Bowie covers. My fave is the Aladdin Sane one. As for Tin Machine, I give it a wide berth!! I have heard some songs, just not my cup of tea. Helen

As for Tin Machine, I give it a wide berth!! I have heard some songs, just not my cup of tea. There were a... very small... handful of decent Tin Machine songs, but, yea, most of it ranges from merely mediocre to utterly dreadful. I like "Bus Stop" and "Amazing" anyway and "Goodbye Mr Ed", "Amlapura" and "I Can't Read" are okay...ish. Honestly, as with "Never Let Me Down" I think there's some damn good songwriting on those albums that just tragically ended up fatally buried beneath a stinking pile of dreadful arrangement and poor musicianship. (As an aside, frankly Bowie's ability to absorb the musical styles around them and twist them to his own liking may well be one of his greatest strengths but when the surrounding styles happen to be Not So Great Actually, it can kind of come back to bite him in the ass in terms of creating what is doomed to become very dated material, but I guess that's why he's called "Bowie" - a double-edged blade cuts both ways. *kof*) In the Case of NLMD, they're extremely overcooked in that typical 80's fashion and haven't aged well AT ALL. With Tin Machine, I blame the jackassery of the Sales brothers almost entirely, especially that loopy drummer. Oh Bo-Bo, what the hell were you thinking?!? XC
